Eating Cheap in New York City

Eating Cheap in New York City

Do you have dietary concerns that make your food choices limited? If you’re worried about trying new dishes, New York City has plenty of the same type of restaurants you can find anywhere else in the United States. You can even go shopping and store ready-to-eat snacks and drinks in the motel room. If you’ve booked a room with a refrigerator and stove or microwave, so much the better to stay on a diet you’re familiar with!

Most motel stays offer continental breakfasts with healthy choices. Be brave and take advantage of them; that’s what they’re there for. As for hunger during the day, if nothing else, you can store some quick snacks to hold you or the kids over until you can get to the restaurant of your choice.

But if you’re up for a bit of culinary adventure, New York City can be sure to have plenty of temptations. Even a burger can be cooked in many different ways. If you’re limited on funds, try the Burger Joint on West 57th Street at the Parker Meridien Hotel (rated as the having the best burgers). Burgers are sold at bargain prices here, bit cash-only is the requirement.

The Counter on First Avenue is a vegetarian restaurant that offers classy dishes meant to impress for affordable prices. They open after 5 pm during the week and at 11 am on weekends. Brunch can be bought at about $4 for sides, $6 to $11 for appetizers, $10 for entrees, $7 to $12 for desserts, $2 to $4 for coffees, and $5 for a pot of tea. Remember to check the menu for any price changes as they may vary.

The Dumpling House is economical for the weary traveler. It’s on Eldridge Street and puts emphasis on food rather than on impressive décor. You get more for your money and can concentrate on your meal instead of distractions.

The Tartine is on West 11th Street, but you may have to wait in line. They have affordable French fare, it’s a small business, and it caters more towards the young crowd. This may please your older teens traveling with you on vacation!

NHA Trang, Great New York Noodletown, and Inoteca are a few of the other places to eat on a budget. Inoteca is on Rivington Street at Ludlow, is open daily, and claims a great Italian wine bar with over 300 choices. You’ll pay from about $8 for appetizers to $13 for a main dish. They offer drinks other than wine, of course, like iced tea and sodas for around $2. Inoteca is said to be the best new small-plates restaurant, serving from 12 to 3 daily and starting at 10 am on weekends.

If your family groans at eating at the lower-cost restaurants, try to treat them at least once to one of the finer dining establishments you can find most anywhere in New York City. It is, after all, a special vacation time! You can find plenty of choices of any food type all over the city. Ask locals for recommendations or read reviews in magazines or newspapers. Many people are happy to share their opinions.

Broadway At A Price You Can’t Beat

Broadway Shows You Can Not Miss at a Price You Can Not Beat

One of the big attractions to New York City is the Broadway show. The cost can elevate from just under $100 to several hundred dollars per ticket. This is one area where you must shop around and plan ahead. Of course, like many other things, the online world offers the best deals on discounts. Check the websites for the particular shows of interest to you, sign up for discount ticket newsletters, subscribe to ticket guides (sometimes this involves a small $4 fee, but what you save in the process could well be worth it).

The two TKTS Booths in New York City are located at Times Square Center and Downtown Theater Center. However, the latter will only sell if you buy a day ahead for matinee tickets. The Times Square booth is open for matinee tickets at 10 am Wednesday and Saturday and 11 am on Sunday. You can buy tickets for evening performances at 3 pm daily. You can save 25% or more off the price of your Broadway show by buying at a booth, with a small per ticket service charge included. You can only pay with cash, travelers checks, or a ticket booth gift certificate.

If you can get to a library, you could use their computer to purchase tickets. Public libraries often offer free internet access, but be sure to guard your private information. Close out any web site and make sure the web site from which you order has a security option.

Make sure when you purchase your tickets that you know the seating arrangement so that you aren’t disappointed when you arrive to see the performance. Seating charts are often offered. You may need to get a small pair of opera glasses for far away seating just to be able to afford the admission cost! However, keep in mind that part of the charm of New York is the Broadway performances. Buy only from reputable dealers, not from some stranger on the street who claims to have a steal of a deal because of some misfortune! It’s no secret that if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Fakes present hard lessons learned.

Must-see performances include:

1. Gypsy—A live concert offered at City Center in July for about $150 to $286. It’s about a stage mother, her two daughters, and their manager. One daughter leaves the act and the shy other daughter becomes a sensation.

2. Les Miserables—A man who steals to feed his family and suffers by imprisonment and public shunning after his release. He’s hounded by a police inspector. Tickets can be found for about $133 or $201.

3. Mamma Mia!—The story of a mother who doesn’t know which of 3 men is her daughter’s father and must accept her daughter’s marriage. Hit songs are by Abba. Tickets can be found from about $92 to $185.

4. Jersey Boys—A story about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons making it big in pop music from the status of blue collar workers. Tickets are found anywhere from about $185 to $610. This musical has set sales records in tickets!

5. Phantom of the Opera—This story has been around for ages because it’s just that good! The bad guy falls for the girl, teaches her to sing, then has to fight for her love. It’s shown for anywhere from about $82 on up.

6. Tarzan—There’s nothing like a Disney musical! This is the musical about the shipwrecked infant raised by gorillas. Tickets can be found from about $62 to $111.

Broadway Makes New York City Sing

Whenever I think of a trip to New York City whether for a vacation or just a short one or two-day visit I can’t help but think of Broadway and the delightful shows that await in these hallowed halls of entertainment delight. Broadway is the essence of New York to me. It can in turns be bawdy, brawling, loud, rowdy, soft, romantic, comedic, and rip-roaringly hilarious. Broadway has it all for those who are willing to look for their perfect fit.

The problem with Broadway is that there are so many wonderful shows to see and such limited time (for most of us) in which to see them. I don’t even believe those who live in New York City have enough time in which to appreciate the artistic treasure trove that is represented within this wonderful city that never sleeps. The truth of the matter is that in order to properly enjoy all the theatrical offerings available to you, you’d almost have to never sleep yourself.

Broadway Musicals

It is important to remember that all shows are not available at all times. Check to see if the show you wish to see will be playing during your visit before getting your hopes up. On to the musicals, which are, by the way, my favorite types of Broadway entertainment. Chicago the Musical, Forbidden Broadway (this one offers an hilarious ‘spoof’ of Broadway), Jersey Boys, Naked Boys Singing (yes, they are!), Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Wicked, and Mama Mia!
