The Basics of Road-Tripping

Road-Tripping (this means traveling by car for your trip) can be done for a variety of reasons, but whatever the motivating force behind the decision to go on a trip, some basic guidelines can be helpful. As with anything in life, use common sense.

Before you leave:

• Where exactly you are going and by what route .
(It could be possible that you have no specific destination; such is an acceptable answer). The idea here is to know what your purpose is. Usually it’s to get from point A to point B, but there are also many more complicated scenarios, such as “swing down to Baton Rouge to visit so-and-so, then head to Tucumcari for the la-de-da and finally head out to Boston by Oct 17th“ or “keep going east until I have $500 left”. You get the idea. The important thing is to know what you want to get out of the journey before you invest your temporary existence into it.

• Time constraints you may have.

Do you have to be there by  certain date? Ought you be back home by a certain date? How fast can you go? How long will it take you to get to your destination? How much time will any tangents likely require? Perhaps you may research different modes of transport at this point. The less time constraints you have, the more freedom you have to relax and enjoy the journey.

• How you will attain food and shelter.

Food: Eating out? Packing for the journey? Hunting Insects? Shelter: Sleeping in hotels? Sleeping in the car? Sleeping in a tent? Couch-surfing? Any of these, or any combination, can be a valid choice. If you plan on eating out and/or staying at hotels, make sure to estimate the costs first and make sure it won’t bankrupt you.

• Finances.

Figure out how much money it’s likely to cost you to go on your trip, factoring in the difference in price in other geographic locales. If you’re not sure of the price differences of other geographic locales, estimate high. Actually, estimate high anyways. There are always unforeseen events for better or poorer, richer or worse.  Make sure to estimate: Gas, for driving. Food, if you haven’t packed in abundance. The cost of expected lodging, whether it be camping, hotels, RV parks, or whatever. Entertainment, if you plan on stopping in some towns and cities and doing anything interesting that costs money. Don’t forget about your bills at home. If you are going on a very long trip or a trip of unknown length, you may want to consider automatic bill payments, or setting up several months in advance of payments.

Stay aware of these issues on your trip as well. It won’t do you a bit of good to plan everything out perfectly and then not realize that your food is disappearing twice as fast as you had anticipated, or other some such problematic eventuality. If you’re on a budget, pay attention to how much you spend each day to see whether you are likely to make it to your destination. Keep your goal in mind, but don’t be fixated on your goal.
Perhaps you’ll end up doing something completely different, who knows? That’s not always a bad thing. The important thing is to enjoy the journey. No matter what happens, you took that plunge, and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life. I’ll say it again because it is vital: enjoy the journey. It’s not all about the destination.

Useful Hints
- Get a really good road atlas.
- Talk to some people in various states you plan on passing thru beforehand (the internet is a wonderful thing) to get an idea for the area.
- Don’t take extra things you are not likely to need. If it is not helpful to you it is best left at home. This is especially true when traveling without your own vehicle to lug things around in.
- Bring a book. When you are done with it you can trade it for one you haven’t read yet.

An Aspen Ski Vacation

Are you planning for an Aspen ski vacation? Do you want to spend and enjoy your days on the fascinating slopes of Aspen? Well, Aspen is one of the well-known ski resorts in the world. With more than 4,500 acres of terrain spread over four main mountains, Aspen no doubt offers an expansive variety of skiing and other related fads for all levels throughout the winter season when a reliably great snow capped the mountains.

Aspen was made known as one of the best destinations for ski vacation when a small group of entrepreneurs and visionaries came to realize the value of Aspen’s other, inexhaustible resource – the snow. Since then, the then sleepy mining town of Aspen was transformed to a bustling and recreational nook. It was the Austrian entrepreneur named Friedl Pfeifer who partnered with Walter Paepcke, a Chicago industrialist, and his wife Elizabeth who came to establish what would be the first of a number of Aspen ski vacation resorts and opened what was known then as the world’s longest chairlift in the winter of 1947. Later, more Aspen ski vacation resorts were opened, followed by a number of hotels and vacation rentals.

Aspen has long been considered as one of the best-known ski vacation resorts in the world because of its fascinating four mountains, which are the main attractions of the place. Located approximately 215 miles southwest of Denver, 75 miles southeast of Eagle, and only minutes from the town’s own Sardy Field (ASE), the four mountains are distinctly highlighting a terrain that is particular for certain levels of skiers. The Aspen Mountain, known as Ajax and one of the attractions of Aspen ski vacation resorts, is specifically geared toward advance skiers as it has more than 3,200 vertical feet on 700 skiable acres. Aside from that Aspen ski vacation attraction, there is also the Aspen Highlands which is situated to the right of Ajax and provides a respectable level of novices as well as intermediate terrain. It is actually the Aspen Highlands where the Olympic medalists prefer to hang out.

For further emphasis, another asset of Aspen ski vacation resorts is the Buttermilk, which is noted for being a smaller, novice-oriented mountain. However, this Aspen ski vacation spot also happens to be the home of the longest terrain park and ESPN Winter X Games of the world. These games, according to some reports usually occur at the end of January, and are considered as one of the added attractions of such Aspen ski vacation spot. Finally, there is the Snowmass, which is the largest of the four Aspen ski vacation mountains. It is best-known for its having a greatest variety for all levels with over 3000 acres of ski terrain. Just like the other mountains, this Aspen ski vacation spot has spectacular views.

Arriving in Tahiti

Tahiti-Faaa International Airport handles all international flights into Tahiti. It is approximately four miles west of Tahiti’s capital city of Papeete. Of course you have to clear customs. But after you clear customs there will be a booth straight ahead of you that is staffed by Tahiti Manava, or the local tourist information office. Go ahead and get what maps and what other information you feel you may want at this point.

There will be two banks to your immediate left and right. One is called Banque de Polynesie and the other is Banque Socredo. Bank Socredo will more readily exchange your American dollars. Both have ATMs you can use for your convenience.

Now to get to your hotel, if you don’t already have arrangements for transportation, you will need to take a taxi as there isn’t any public transportation that passes in front of the airport. The official fare from 8 pm to 6 am to the west coast of the island is $15 and $25 if you are going downtown. You will need an obligatory $1 for each bag you have. If you arrive in Tahiti between 10 pm and 6 am the only choice you have if you don’t have pre-arranged transportation plans, is a taxi. The public transportation doesn’t run during those hours.

As I’ve said that there isn’t any public transportation that passes in front of the airport, if you want you can trek across the parking lot and up the set of stairs you see to the main road and flag down the first public bus you will see, again if it’s not between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am.

If you are driving a rental car, you will see the major rental car signage readily in front of you. If you have trouble or need to ask the whereabouts for anything, just ask anybody. Tahitians are very friendly and most often will be able to direct you where you are trying to go. Of course there is the information desk as well.

After getting your rental car and you are ready to drive Tahiti, if you are in one of the largest of resort hotels such as the InterContinental Tahiti, the Sofitel, or the Le Meridein Tahiti, you take Route 1 west all the way, and just follow the signage.

If you are in the Sheraton Hotel Tahiti, take Route 1 east all the way until you see the signage. If you are going downtown, watch for the Route 5 sign directing you to the expressway that connecting Papeete to the west coast. If you go too far, just remember to pull over when you have the chance.

Tahiti is not that hard to get around. And it’s not much to backtrack if you actually feel you’ve lost your way. But do remember that the island essentially goes ‘round in a circle.

If for some reason you need to store your baggage, every hotel on the island will store your baggage for free.

Circus Circus Family Fun Vegas Style

Circus Circus Las Vegas boasts of being the most kid friendly hotel in Las Vegas. With its big top attitude and its indoor amusement park it very well may be. In addition to being the most kid friendly hotel on the Las Vegas strip Circus Circus Hotel is also the fifth largest hotel in the world. Of course this is at the moment and that is subject to change at any time.

The beauty of this particular hotel doesn’t lie so much in its size or even the circus-like atmosphere. The charm lies in the fact that it was something new and relatively untried along the Vegas strip. Rather than build to suit the gamblers they were hoping to attract, this particular hotel was wise enough to offer something new and untried by appealing to families with children rather than solely to gamblers.

The gamble seems to be paying off in a city that is known for both its hits and its misses. Other hotels and casinos are also working to cultivate the family friendly image that Circus Circus has basically proven. Not only did this hotel build The Adventuredome Theme Park they also decided to make accommodations even more family friendly by accommodating RVs at the Circusland RV Park. This offers a great place for families to stay that might not otherwise grace the theme park, hotel, or the casino.

Don’t forget that there is a casino involved and that is the primary purpose of this gigantic hotel, resort, and theme park. The casino makes the expense of building it all very much worthwhile and brings in big business of its own each and every day. In grand Vegas style there is also the requisite onsite shopping and of course full service of wedding options in addition to a wedding chapel and banquet facilities in which to hold the reception of your dreams. The shopping at Circus Circus offers everything from ultra exclusive boutique shops and salons to stores such as Under $10 and the trading Post, which offers fad jewelry and other kid friendly gifts.

This hotel has a somewhat unique concept that sets it apart from the many others along Vegas’ strip. If you are traveling to Vegas with the family I very much recommend at least checking them out and comparing prices and packages with the other hotels and resorts in the area. Keep in mind that comps are like money in the bank particularly when they involve food or activities that you were planning to do even without the comps. So you may be able to negotiate a much better deal even if you’re paying a couple more dollars a night by having free parking, complimentary meals, or tickets to events, shows, or attractions.

Now we’re on to my favorite part of the discussion. Dining options. Circus Circus does not disappoint when it comes to offering variety to its guests. In addition to The Steakhouse, there is The Garden Grill, Mexitallia, Pink Pony, Circus Buffet, Pizzeria, Westside Deli, and Barista Café. The food offerings accommodate varying budgets and familial needs by offering some kid friendly dining choices to visitors and guests as well. The good news however is that if these restaurants aren’t appealing to you there is another hotel, casino, or restaurant next door that has different fare to offer.

If you are looking for a great place to stay in Las Vegas along with the family there are very few hotels that will offer the overall environment of fun and wonder that you will find at Circus Circus. In addition to the wonderful rooms, the great food, the casino, and The Adventuredome Theme Park you will find that the shows here are as kid friendly and entertaining for the entire family as the atmosphere in general. This is a great vacation destination anywhere. Considering the fact that it is in Las Vegas and it is very nearly the perfect vacation retreat for those with children.

An Indian Vacation and a Pilgrimage

A rich cultural heritage, varied wildlife, magnificent mountain ranges, picturesque beaches, exquisite temples and monuments, rejuvenating hill stations, that’s India for you, a premier vacation destination. However, aside from these attractions and the varied destinations, India is also famous for one other thing: pilgrimages. Quite an increasing number of visitors have found out that having an Indian vacation and a pilgrimage is quite an interesting and rewarding experience.

India is a practically a country that is very diverse. Almost all places in India offer its own attractions which draws a yearly influx of tourists and pilgrims from around the globe. Some of the more popular and notable pilgrimage destinations include the Golden Temple of Amritsar, the Dilwara temples of Mount Abu and the Palitana in Gujarat, Meenakshi. The Rock Fort in Tamil Nadu, the Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Sabarimala and Guruvayur in Kerala and not to mention the Badami Caves in Karnataka are also targets of pilgrimage tourism.

Being the land of Gods and Goddess, India is at the very center of spiritual and religious activities. Pilgrims flock to holy towns and temples to have religious enlightenment or experiences may them be absolute believers or just tourists interested in India’s rich culture, heritage and spiritual beliefs. Nowadays, travel agencies and tours are packaging special pilgrimage packages for tourists who are looking at India as their next vacation destination.

Pilgrimages are as varied as the religions in India themselves. For example Christian, Jainism and Sikh pilgrimages are now commonly packaged as tours for vacationers in India. Places of worships, shrines, churches and locations where these religions began, flourished or even saw their demised in India are the prime destinations of such tours. For example, the cities like Calicut, Trivandrum, Madurai, Goa and Mumbai are famous for Christian churches which stand in testament to the unique and magnificent architectural feats of olden times. Similarly, the serene worship halls and shrines of Jainism believers offer yet another look at Indian architectural splendor.

Other pilgrimage destination sites include the revered Badrinath temple which is dedicated to Shri Badrinathji and was said to have been constructed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The Kedarnath in the state of Uttarakhand, one of the holiest pilgrimage destination in the country, houses the 12 holy Jyotirlingams. Another revered temple is the Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra. The place is so revered by Hindus that those residing in Northern India would make it a point to visit the temple once in their lifetime.

Tirupti Balaji temple which is situated on the seventh peak of the Tirupati hill is said to be richest temple in the country and perhaps even in the world. It has a rich history behind which spans for centuries. Another temple which perhaps rival the popularity of other pilgrimage sites is the Haridwar Temple which is considered the gateway to other sites in Uttrakhand region.

It is said that Haridwar Temple was blessed by the trinity of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The temple is said to purify the mind, the body and the soul of pilgrims. It has become the center of spirituality in the region and incidentally also of arts, science and culture.

We can go on citing pilgrimage sites in India and we will run out of space before we run out of sites to mention. The richness of India’s spiritual and religious traditions is truly an experience worth trying. An Indian vacation and a pilgrimage is something that should never be set aside.

A Family Guide to Maui

The tropical paradise of Maui offers something special for every visitor, but the outstanding offerings particularly well-suited to families surprises many.

Most resorts on Maui provide programs for young guests including planned beach activities. The Westin Maui at Kaanapali Beach Resort is particularly popular with families thanks to the tropical foliage, waterfalls and parrots. The aquatic playground featuring a 128-foot slide makes childhood fantasies come true. Maui hotels and resorts are about much more than a room and a beach and many include special touches to encourage family visitors.

Children love to explore the natural beauty of Maui. A trip to Haleakala National Park is a must-do for families. The diversity of ecosystems and the exposure to so many new and different tropical species is a learning experience not to be missed. While watching the sunrise from Haleakala is popular with Maui visitors, it is not generally well suited to younger children because of the early start time and amount of waiting time involved.

The Maui Ocean Center showcases Hawaii’s underwater environment. Voted Hawaii’s Top-Rated Family Attraction by Zagat Survey, the Maui Ocean Center should be on every family’s tour plan.

Children enjoy the tactile experience of feeling things like a sea cucumber in the touch pool. A particularly interesting feature of the Maui Ocean Center popular with adults as well as children is the glass tunnel that leads into a 750,000-gallon aquarium with sharks and other colorful tropical fish swimming overhead. The average visit to the Maui Ocean Center takes about two hours, but many visitors linger longer over exhibits and choose to dine in one of Maui Ocean Center’s two restaurants.

The Hawaii Nature Center located in the Iao Valley on Maui is especially popular with children ages 3 to 8. The Center includes more than 30 hands-on, interactive exhibits as well as guided rainforest walks. Exhibits feature species native to Maui including the world’s only carnivorous caterpillar.

Maui was once considered the capital of the whaling industry and is the winter home to migrating Pacific Humpback whales. The Whalers Village Museum located in the Kaanapali shopping complex is dedicated to teaching about this important creature. This Maui museum displays over seventy species of whales. The skeletal remains of a 40-foot Sperm Whale are amazing, and children are shocked to see the actual size of this ocean giant. Admission to this Maui attraction is free.

The Lahaina Kaanapali Railroad, better known as the Sugar Cane Train, will be a hit with young train fanatics. While this Maui attraction is often rated as boring by adults, it is perfectly suited to families with younger children.

Traveling in an open-air coach pulled by a steam-engine, visitors enjoy a leisurely six-mile journey through Maui. Crossing a 325-foot curved wooden trestle provides a panoramic view of the West Maui Mountains, as well as islands neighboring Maui. Storytellers share the history of Maui during the trip.

A Maui vacation is not complete until a luau is included. Most Maui resorts and hotels offer luaus. Among the most recommended non-resort luaus are the Old Lahaina Luau and The Feast at Lele, both located in the Maui village of Lahaina. Children will be captivated by the Hawaiian dance and music offered by these Maui performers and are certain to find something they enjoy eating among the many luau offerings.

Maui is considered a top choice for family vacations. Children and Adults alike with enjoy learning the history and culture of Maui at locations all over the island.

Buffalo National River

An Arkansas Destination Worth Visiting

Looking for an Arkansas destination? If you are, Buffalo River is a tourist attraction that should be included in your itinerary. Considered as America’s first national river, there are a lot of things that makes a visit to this 132-mile stretch worthwhile.

A journey to the Buffalo River would take you down to the White River in the wilderness of upper Ponca as well as towards the most remote and rugged counties in the Ozarks. However, this stretch of water is not ideal for floating, provides minimal access, and can only be reached by the dedicated hiker.

Situated in Northern Arkansas, the Buffalo River is the first national river in the United States. Stretching over 150 miles long, the lower portion of the river, covering 135 miles, is operated by the National Park Service. The whole stretch of river passes through four counties namely Newton, Searcy, Baxter, and Marion. It starts from the highest section of the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks, then descends down to the Springfield Plateau, crossing the Salem Plateau before merging with the White River.

The Buffalo River National Park boasts of being the home of Arkansas’ only elk herd. The upper part of the River located in the Ozark National Forest is run by the U.S. Forest Service and is considered as a national scenic and wild river.

On March 1, 1972, an Act of Congress paved the way for the establishment of the Buffalo National River. The enactment of this Act officially ended the plans of the United States Army Corps of Engineers to build more than one dam on the river.

Boxley Valley as well as Ponca are top destinations for elk watching. Serving as access point is Ponca and Steel Creek, which is an ideal spot for primitive camping. Lost Valley and Goat Trail are perfect spots to go hiking. Going down the river, there are several camping sites at Kyle’s Landing, Carver, Pruitt, and Ozark. Kyle’s and Ozark provide opportunities for hiking.

Majority of the areas in the Buffalo National River are ideal for family getaways. A canoe ride can be an exciting venture for the children as well as pets. Along the way, one would be treated to a sight of turtles sunning on a log, blooming wild azaleas floating in the river, or taking a dip in the river’s blue-green waters.

Since the restocking program that brought a total of 112 elks to the state from Colorado and Nebraska in the early part of the 1980s, approximately 450 elks have made the river their home. Spring is usually the time when calves are born and by the middle of May, the sight of newborn elks following their parents is a sight to behold. In the fall, the shrill cries of mating bulls can be heard from the bluffs.

The Buffalo National River also boasts of being the home of black bear although these creatures are rarely seen. However, there is a chance that you might see a mother bear cuddling her cubs as you make your way round the bend.

The trip would also provide an opportunity for spotting different varieties of herons. A glimpse of the Great Blue can be as elusive as the black bears although the green herons will play hopscotch with you. Woodpeckers can be heard from the distance although they would not be seen. Along the way, you will hear the sounds of songbirds such as mockingbids, finches, cardinals, among others.

Buffalo National River is an Arkansas destination that gives you an opportunity to experience nature and make your trip truly exciting.

A Summer Indian Vacation

Some like it hot, while others like it very hot! Or something like that. But summer in India is not at that bad as some tourists would like to think. The country being as large as it is hosts a number of possibilities even during the summer time. So it is absolutely possible and not totally unheard of that people enjoy a hot summer Indian vacation.

India enjoys four seasons: winter months are in January and February; summer months are from March to May; monsoon or the rainy season are from June to September; and from October to December is post-monsoon period. While a huge number of visitors in India do visit the country during the winter months, there is a growing number that prefer the hot summer months and even the wet monsoon seasons.

Probably the reasons include the fantastic summer festivals celebrated in practically all the corners of the country as well as destinations like the Himalayas which is quite a treat when visited during the summer months. In fact it is usually during summer that the Himalayas can be visited. One can see the snow-clad mountain peaks in Leh and Ledakh.

Well known during the summer time are also the hill stations of Kashmir, Kodaikanal, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar and Uttaranchal. Mountain rivers also offer a good opportunity for water rafting and kayaking. Moreover, beaches like Anjuna and Baga are very popular for summer goers both international and local tourists. Anjuna beach is a couple of kilometers from Mapusa in Goa and is quite famous for its night time beach parties. Similarly, the Baga which is also quite accessible from Mapusa in Goa offers a picturesque ocean view and a highly active night life.

While others enjoy the natural beauty of India during summer, some take advantage of these months for the often cheaper and discounted rates of tour, travel fares and even hotel accommodations and resorts. For some summer gives them the perfect opportunity to enjoy a whole new country.

Monsoon rains come after the summer months and believe you and me, a number of visitors intentionally come at the end of summer and enjoy the rather wet monsoon season. In India the onset of rain is a symbol of fertility and is serves a vital part of the country’s culture and traditions.

Still others travel to India to enjoy the festivals there, the biggest of which are usually held during summer or towards the end of the season. One such festival is the Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai. The celebration is held for ten days and includes various cultural and social programs and activities all geared towards worshipping the elephant-headed god Ganesh. Visitors will get to enjoy dancing and singing in the streets together with thousands of believers and residents.

Related to religious festivals are the pilgrimages. One of the more familiar one is the Char Dham or the pilgrimage to find the source of the Ganges River or the Ganga Mata as the river is called in India. Being India’s most sacred river and the most important in terms of people’s livelihood as well, the Char Dham can only be held during the summer and monsoon months after the snow melts in the Himalayas and the roads become accessible again.

India is such as huge land of opportunity for travelers. From the winter months, down to the summer days and then towards the monsoon seasons, visitors have always places to go and things to do. A hot summer Indian vacation is definitely not something one should cross out in ones travel calendar.
